Stalactites

2023

The darkness, the humid air, and the invigorating aroma of wet stones. The resonance from random dripping sounds attests to the vast open halls that must be hidden in the darkness. Marvelous towers and spires of stone. The inner gaze is attracted to imaginative pictures of the underworld creatures who must have constructed these magnificent forms... But then - science explains how the formations are produced from drips, each of which has carefully made its way through forest, dirt, and clay before depositing a minuscule bit of lime on the cave ceiling - before ultimately letting go and falling to the earth. You get a temporary dizzying sensation when you glimpse the vast propagation of geological time. However, this insight must quickly be let go again in order to regain balance on the wet stones, and one is left with a limited comprehension of the context of things and must continue to just wonder without being able to fully understand.

Caves has inspired us to build an audio-visual installation, where the purpose is to recreate this space, which is devoid of time, but at the same time exhibits a geological time scale before one's eyes. We want to give the viewer this feeling of stillness, darkness and silence through an installation that displays slow and weak light animations together with quiet and ambient sounds, which precisely by virtue of its slowness and pauses, create the darkness and silence that you can encounter in the caves.
